Rihanna’s ‘American Oxygen’ Wasn’t About Eric Garner — But It Could Be

I don’t know about you all, but the first time I heard and saw the video for Rihanna’s powerful R8 track, “American Oxygen,” the first thing that popped into my head was, “I can’t breathe.” You know, since the whole idea of “the land of the free and the home of the brave” has been a little dented of late.

It turns out, however, that the song wasn’t originally written about Eric Garner or any of the recent police-connected deaths that have spurred protests and riots. But that doesn’t make it any less relevant in those situations.

“[The song] was written before everything happened with Eric Garner,” X Ambassadors frontman Sam Harris told MTV News. Harris co-wrote the track, which premiered on Tidal. “[But] the fact that it was written before all this stuff happened doesn’t really make a difference to me. I think it’s just as important.”

Kurt Cobain Influenced Pretty Much All Genres — Just Ask Wiz Khalifa And Fall Out Boy

Kurt Cobain’s Nirvana released just three full-length studio albums from 1989 through 1993, but their music is still inspiring audiences today.

That influence is sure to reach even greater heights when HBO airs its Cobain doc “Montage of Heck” on May 4.

So, how has Nirvana maintained its importance more than 20 years after Cobain’s passing in ’94? Wiz Khalifa might have the answer. As he put it, Cobain’s work continues to inspire because it’s simply timeless.

“I’m only 27 so when they were poppin’, I was really, really young,” Khalifa told MTV News. “But him as a writer, how he put his stuff together, it reaches so many people and so many ages. It’s just timeless.”

Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump agrees, but notes that he didn’t fully appreciate Cobain’s greatness until it was almost too late.

“In the era, I remember being like, ‘Eh, I don’t like Nirvana. I don’t like this. This isn’t for me,’” Stump recalled. “Toward the end, I started to realize, this is awesome. I was one of those jerk-little kids that was like, ‘Eh. Whatever’s popular, I don’t like that.’”

And, for good measure, she also added a shot of herself at the pool party in question, smiling as she stood by the glistening water at an outdoor bash in her floaty frock.
The night before, the star gave revellers a view of her sculpted abs as she arrived at Las Vegas' Chateau Nightclub And Rooftop in a white crop top with patterned skinny jeans and a cream jacket.

During a concert in Taipei, Taiwan on Tuesday (try saying that three times fast), Katy took the stage to belt out “Unconditionally” while draped in a Taiwanese flag and wearing the dress adorned with sunflowers, which were the emblem of anti-China protests in Taiwan last year.

The concert took place just a few weeks after the anniversary of the Sunflower Student Movement, which protested China’s meddling in Taiwanese affairs. Sunflowers came to symbolize the tensions between self-ruled Taiwan and mainland China, which still claims sovereignty over Taiwan.

At the Billboard Latin Music Awards in Miami on Thursday night (April 30), Jennifer Lopez made some serious magic happen onstage.

No, she didn’t flaunt her infamous lip-syncing skills or stun us with a promiscuous rendition of “Booty.” Instead, she reprised the movie role that shot her to stardom by paying tribute to Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, who was murdered two decades ago at age 23. Joined by the Quintanilla family band, Los Dinos — which includes Selena’s brother A.B., sister Suzette, and widower Chris Pérez — Lopez charged through a bilingual medley of hits. She opened with “Como La Flor” as a montage of Selena footage played behind her, then moved on to “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” “Amor Prohibido,” “I Could Fall in Love,” and “No Me Queda Mas.” The only song that was really missing was “Dreaming of You,” but honestly, that might’ve made the whole thing a little too heartbreaking.
